Overview:
The largest city in South America, with a population of almost 19 million, Sao Paulo is the seventh most populous city in the world. This cosmopolitan city is a mix of people from all over the world, with areas of town heavily influenced by Asia and Europe. As with any city this large (and its surrounding areas), Sao Paulo is a city full of great buildings signaling progress while also containing highly depressed districts as well. There is much need here - particularly spiritual need. People are generally open to spiritual conversation and the Gospel can be proclaimed in schools.

Ministry Description:
Soccer is practically a religion in Brazil. While 2014 may seem far away, the country is already buzzing with excitement over their opportunity to host the World Cup that year. You will be using soccer as a way to reach children in local communities through our sister organization, YMI Brasil. While you are in the Sao Paulo area you will be working in local schools or churches, providing sports camps for children in the community. Working with our missionary contact who used to be a professional soccer player, your team will provide basic sports instruction, give their testimonies, tell Bible stories and lead songs with motions that will teach people about Jesus. In order to prepare, your team will be supplied with sports curriculum from UW Sports Ministry. Elements from this curriculum will help you to plan and implement the camp. Since you're working with elementary-aged children, you don't need to be a gifted athlete to run the camps, you just need a willingness to proclaim the message of Christ and a heart for children.

Food and Lodging:
You will be staying in a local missionary's home, living alongside his family. While you are there, food will be prepared for you by the missionary's family and by other local people. The food will consist of local dishes.

Airport & Transportation:
YMI will arrange all of your transportation during your trip as it is included in the trip cost. Your team will fly into Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport.

Visa & Passport:
You will need to possess a passport that will be valid at least 6 months after the date you enter the country. Within 90 days of arrival, you will need to obtain a tourist visa from the Brazilian Consulate in the United States. To better understand the process and to help obtain the visa, YMI recommends you use Travel Document Systems (www.traveldocs.com). They will work to obtain your visa for you.  If you are part of a YMI Team, we will contact you to let you know when it is time to obtain the visa and any steps you will need to take. Church teams are responsible for ensuring all of their mission participants have a Brazilian visa prior to departure.

Vaccinations:
Please consult your doctor, local travel clinic and the CDC (Center for Disease Control) website at www.cdc.gov for information on appropriate vaccinations for your country of destination.
