YMI Begins in Peru
YMI's vision is to replicate our ministry in other nations around the world. We're proud to announce that as of March 2011, we have taken another step in that direction. On March 8th, YMI Peru was born.
Headed by Julio Serrano, the national director, YMI Peru aims to train young people in Lima and in the amazon region of Peru to share the Gospel. This is only the beginning, as YMI Peru intends to not only reach its whole nation, training young people to reach out in their communities, but also begin to influence surrounding countries to join the movement. Others have already expressed interest in beginning YMI and Julio has been there to advise them.
Within Peru, Julio is working with churches in Lima and also in the Amazon region of north Peru. Continuing his ministry with the Aguarunas Indians, Julio is using YMI to train them in sports ministry and evangelism. This was a large part of the vision he described to YMI representatives in Brazil last November. While in Brazil to witness the training of a Brazilian mission team, Julio had the opportunity to see YMI's ministry firsthand. He also met with Juca Cerpe (YMI Brasil's National Director) and Brian Hughes (YMI US's President). After spending time together, Julio returned to Peru with a strong desire to begin YMI in Lima. Once home, he brought churches and individuals together to start our sister organization there.
Now, Julio will be receiving a YMI Team from the United States this July. With leaders he is developing among the Aguarunas and those in Lima, YMI already has two bases of operation in Peru. This August YMI will have it's first-ever training event among the Aguarunas people, raising up even more evangelistically-minded young people to share the Gospel with others. YMI Peru is off to a great start and we are looking forward with expectation at what god will allow the people of Peru to do in their own country and in South America.
